This week I’m in Chicago, so I’ll concentrate on design in this area since it happens to be a big influence in the industry for architecture and style. Chi — ca — go, Chi —- ca — go, that great lil’ town…..

Apartment Therapy House Tours by you.

Apartment Therapy – came through for me and has linked me in to some of the hottest house tours. This particular home has the most interesting layout. Love it!

Macy’s – Our State Street store was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1979 for both its beauty and historical significance.

THE ARCHIVE (7th floor)-Our Archive brings our history to life. An extensive collection of items from the last 150 years are on display.

THE GREAT CLOCKS (State & Washington and State & Randolph)-Weighing in at over seven tons each, these massive and elegant timepieces have kept Chicago on time for more than a century.

GREAT GRANITE PILLARS (State Street entrance)- Installed in 1902, only those on the Temple of Karnak in Egypt are taller.

THE TIFFANY CEILING (5th floor)-Installed in 1907, it’s the largest unbroken example of Tiffany Favrile glass in the world, containing over 1.6 million pieces.

THE LOST FOUNTAIN (Atrium) Constructed in 1991 and made in the likeness and scale of Daniel Burnham’s original plans for the State Street building. Plans for the fountain were recovered after the architectural firm discovered original drawings while spending over 2,500 hours researching for the renovation in the early 1990s.

THE 28 SHOP® (3rd floor) Created in 1941, this haute couture shop was named for the traditional entrance of the carriage trade at 28 East Washington Street. It originally housed 28 dressing salons, each with a distinct décor and was designed by Joseph Platt who had completed his set design for Gone With the Wind in 1939. Christian Dior and a very young Yves Saint Laurent made their first trip to America in 1957 to visit The 28 Shop.

Architechtural Tours - For every tour in Chicago you would ever want.  We went on the river cruise, had a humorous tour guide.  In one hour I learned more than I had in design school the whole semester.

Millineum Park -  This is like no other park you will ever visit in your  life.

Millennium ParkAmong Millennium Park’s prominent features are the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion , the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind in the United States; the interactive Crown Fountain by Jaume Plensa; the contemporary Lurie Garden designed by the team of Kathryn Gustafson, Piet Oudolf and Robert Israel; and Anish Kapoor’s hugely popular Cloud Gate sculpture on the AT&T Plaza.

This was a great trip.  We celebrated my mother in law’s 95th and had plenty of time for food and fun.  There is much to see in Chicago.  It will take me a lifetime to see it all.
