Simon Doonan cracks me up. If you’re not familiar, he’s been the creative director for Barneys New York for over 20 years and is primarily responsible for the crazy window displays that go up each season. Their holiday displays being the most famous (or infamous as the case may be). Doonan is also regularly featured on both VH1 and E Channels shows where they ask celebs to chime in on everything from fashion to news. This is where I became a fan.
I was perusing the holiday issue of Domino Magazine and found an article written by Doonan about his process and history of designing the holiday window themes. Under pressure from his boss, Doonan was challenged to come up with an eco-friendly themes for the 2007 holiday theme. He eventually was struck with an epiphany and came up with Rudolph the Recycling Reindeer.
Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find the article online to share, mostly because Domino doesn’t have a search function on their site (I already told them it’s a complete failure on their part), so I recommend you check it out on the newsstand before it’s gone. Well, it may already be gone, but I will share with you Doonan’s 12 Days of Christmas – Green Version.
On the 12th day of Christmas, my pro-green true love gave to me:
- Twelve tons of tofu
- Eleven solar panels
- Ten New Age gurus
- Nine organic carob bars
- Eight tickets to Burning Man
- Seven sustainable ostrich farms
- Six compost toilets
- Five rolls of recycled gift wrap
- Four fair-trade futons
- Three free-range organic hens
- Two vegan chefs
- And a Prius in a pear tree!
Ok, now its time for me to hit the stores. I’m way behind on the shopping.
