The Apple Has Fallen - Mother Son Art Exhibit

So, if you think you might want to join us for a great afternoon event at a lovely home on the golf course in the La Quinta / Indio area, review the information on the portfolio page.
We have three and one half weeks left to finish all of our art for the “Mother Son Art Exhibit” (click on link or review next page). I’m nervous about getting the home ready to have company and also stressing over finalizing a few pieces. This will the first time my son, Dave Conrey and I will do something like this. I’m hoping the response will be great enough that it won’t be out last.
I have a tremendous amount of homework to do to get folks out there to our desert home. Will any of our friends drive out there? Possibly a couple or two. I must take on every opportunity to get acquainted with as many people as possible to create success for this event.
I worked on three oil paintings last night. I put on the finishing touches. When I got up this a.m. I took shots of them right away. It is always easier for me to upload them and take a look at them in print. I can see if I can consider the it finished or if it needs more work. The particular piece below still needs work. I have some paint build up that needs to be removed and touch up the hands and clouds. I’ll work until it is right and add a glaze with a tint, then varnish. I felt pretty good about the direction but it is not on my approval list for the show.
The next guy I believe needs more work as well. I can now see that his nose and lips are just a wee too exaggerated. I wanted to make sure this guy appealed to everyone. We shall see. But, for now I must go back and take a look at these before I add them to the exhibit. I appreciate any feedback from folks even if they think they would never buy them, I want to know what they think about them. Not that it would change my mind much on what I paint but possibly I might entertain other ideas and subject matter. This particular subject matter is called “The Baptism”.
I was not in a great space in my life when I started creating some of these nudes. It’s not meant to religious, or esoteric. The nudity represents vulnerability and purity. I have a great relationship with my husband today but back then it was yucky with a certain man in my life. To me water is very healing and spiritual. I’m a swimmer as well and after a bunch of laps, I just kick back and float and look at the sky. Everything seems perfect after that.
My son, Dave Conrey has a flamboyant style with his colorful abstracts. But there is also a certain calmness within the depth of each piece. I’m not sure how he actually achieves that except through his patience to each and every stroke. If you’ve never painted an abstract then you might say “I could do that!” Truth is, it’s not that easy to make a terrific abstract. There are many out there that are ok or good but it takes time or the perfect moment with the stroke of the brush to create one that is dynamic. I believe my son has that touch.
He also has a great eye for photography. I’m hoping that he will share some of these at this exhibit as well. He’s keeping the surprise under wraps. I can’t wait for the unveiling.
Again, some of the images are listed on the “Mother Son Art Exhibit” page. We’ll be adding more images as we finish each piece.
I hope you can join us on November 8th.
