Lowbrow Spotlight: Amy Sol
Posted by mt | Filed under Random
Here is a prime example of how the term “Lowbrow” falls way short in categorizing today’s artists. Born in Korea, Las Vegas’ Amy Sol—only 25 years old, according to her Myspace page—creates such beautiful, subtle paintings that I’m at a loss as to how to adequately categorize her.
Painting on wood panels, using dreamy, muted colors, Amy depicts serene yet playful images of girls and their animal companions. Their fantastic, whimsical nature would be over the top if it weren’t for her palette, which grounds the surreal in a comfortable way.
Amy is one of those artists to watch. Her shows are already sold out by the opening reception, and her prints go quickly too. For someone so young—which I can hardly believe—I’m really excited to see how her work develops.
She has a solo show, Karmic Magic, coming up at L.A.’s Thinkspace, opening June 13. For preview information, e-mail contact@sourharvest.com.
