Don’t Be Scared By a Little Design Vision

I have to laugh at myself this past week. When describing design details for a new client’s home, I became very excited and I think I scared her a little bit. Interior designers are very much like hair dressers. Hairdressers love to socialize while their playing with their client’s hair. While they chat away, they keep playing and keep cutting and playing and cutting. If you don’t watch them or stop them, you walk out with half a head of hair. The same is true for interior designers. We just love what we do and it doesn’t take much for us to go off and running. Sometimes, we lose track and keep adding without taking anything away. When talking with my client, on and on I went, “And, then we can do this and we can do that and how about a nice wood decking out their to match the interior?” My client looked at my with that crooked puppy dog look suggesting, “Is she crazy?”
I composed myself and back up a bit. “Of course”, I say, “you have a budget and this is a thought for future.” I wouldn’t take everything your designer says to heart. We’re creative minds that can’t stop creating, and sometimes we need to be reeled back in before we go too far. However, it’s always good to think of these things early on and keep a list of ideas or plans for future remodeling or additions. You will think back later and say, “Remember when Michele gave us that advice.”
I like to suggest to clients that we complete a design theory for the whole house first in order to create unity throughout the home. This initial process leads them down the path for any purchases they might consider in the future.
The next time you think your designer is running amok, realize we sometimes can’t stop designing in our heads. It just comes out in the process and we need to work it though. We see a great vision and we tend to blurt it out to make sure it fits your vision. Consider the complete consultation up front and avoid the mistakes in the future.
