Dont Be Left Out!

From Gallery 1988’s Toys show. Someone got lucky, and it wasn’t me.
Given the frenzy over today’s Lowbrow art stars, shows can sell out opening night—or earlier. And what if you don’t live near a gallery? How do you get in on the action?
Luckily, this is a fairly tech-savvy crowd, and they know how to hustle for a buck. Most artists and galleries have e-newsletter sign-up instructions online. These newsletters can range from announcements to preview links, where art is being bought before the shows open. Also, look for blogs run by the artists and galleries. Sometimes art will be posted on the blog before the main site, simply because it’s easier (no Webmaster required).
Whatever your attitude toward Myspace, sometimes this is the eastiest way for artists to share current information, and if you make them “friends,” you’ll get bulletins about upcoming shows (or if they’re putting pieces up on eBay for quick cash).
If you see a show coming up and there is no chance you can make it or you’re afraid of missing a preview—and you’re really serious about scoring a piece—why not ask the gallery if they can accomodate you? You’ve got nothing to lose. And if all else fails, keep in mind many artists will do commission work.
