Decent or Undecent Nudes

lARGE nUDE BY SHELLY by you.For years, I’ve been hiding this piece of art in my studio behind a door. I have step grandchildren and my husband gets a little homophobic having it around. I had to clean up the studio due to the amount of canvases that were piling up against the wall. It was imperative to have a cleaner environment. This creates a better atmosphere to paint more often. I also want to invite folks up stairs to see my work. Artists tend to have a wee bit of attention deficit and I definately fall in to that category. When the place is a mess, I’m a mess.

This nude is my favorite silk paiting I’ve ever painted. I’m sorry about the bad shot but it’s impossible not to get the glass reflection. Also, the scale is huge as you can see. Because of the size, I decided I would bring it out of hiding and place it at the top of our stairs. This is perfect as no one from downstairs can see it but it has great presence in the hallway. The grandkids know me well enough to accept who I am and that decent nudity is acceptable. After all, we are all nude with clothes on.

Nudes are not the easiest to market. “Skin art” won’t exactly get you on the map right away. I find it funny myself but I guess I’ll have to go with the flow. At this point, I’m painting more figurative with clothes and then some nudes as well. I like to paint odd faces. Not pretty, but unique with strong features. When I paint a face that is too pretty, it just doesn’t do a thing for me. I guess it is just not my style

Cleaning up my studio was the best thing I did this past week. I found that I’m very prolific with a limited time schedule. I have 40 pieces of art in my home right now. Some old, some new, some unfinished and some I should paint over or throw out. My goal is to finish about six unfinished pieces and create booklet of my work in the next month. I will give myself a deadline of September 15th to complete a series of fifteen to twenty pieces that look like they belong together. Ok, now I’ve got to hold myself to that commitment.

What is stopping you in your life? A messy studio or sewing table? A garage you can’t get through? No time like the present - spring has sprung and summer will be over soon. You don’t want to wait until it is cold.
