Color Inside and Out

We’ve talked alot about art this past month. Since color is our focus of this site I’ll explain why we are adding art to the blog site. Art is color and plays the biggest impact in a room because it is displayed on a wall for everyone to see. When there is a lack of color in furnishings, add colorful art. When there is lack of art, bring on the color in furnishings and accessories. Choosing which is the best solution can be confusing.
If you like a lot of color, then so be it. Add color to walls and furnishings. If you want a quieter look, add color in the art and keep the furniture very monochromatic. You can have white walls with just a hint of color. In your accessories choose some of the same colors as the art.
Exterior surroundings play a big part in our lives with color. There are simple areas in architecture, that all have impact by a simple swash of color. This past week I helped a client with the paint choices for their exterior. The home is mediterranean architecture with spanish tile. This style looks best with light or warm tones. Originally, it was a cream tone. The client wanted a change so we picked a deep beige for the stucco walls, a cream for the eaves, and black for the arbor and accents.

Around the retaining walls, there is a sculpted terra cotta tile with a relief pattern in white. It looked nice but it didn’t flow with our concept. I suggested a glaze in black and bronze. With the talent of a faux painter and Voile’! Bellisimo!
We started with a creamy background and added black to the edges of the relief but it turned the background gray. The black border became too heavy. What to do? We added some antique gold bronzing liquid, rubbed on a dab or two. The gray was gone and the vivid black was toned down. Voile’ again!

If we left the original tile in the white relief, it would be nice but no connection with the black arbors and trim. This created harmony and pulled the entire look together.
A simple change or twist in color can create magic and make or break your day. For interiors, remove everything in the room except your furniture. Begin to add the accessories one item at a time. Don’t over clutter. Keep it simple, less is more. Remove anything you don’t want or need. For exteriors, look for the obvious to match like the photos above. Landscaping with color is important. I suggested to the client to add some brilliant orange and green in the planter. Can you see how that will give it the finishing touch? Without it, something is missing.
OK, now you’ve got some tools. Go have fun!
