Weekenders

Dave is off on a little sabatical so I’m taking over on Weekenders.  My mind set this week will be focused on sophistication for miscellaneous interior design products and art.  You won’t find these in the 99 Cents stores.  They are a few steps above in quality.

Home Portfolio -  This is one of the best sites I’ve seen for search engines on interior and exterior design solutions.  Nice layout as well.

Boyd Lighting - Following that link above I found this lighting manufacturer.  Very sophisticated.

Sharon Courtney - For the pianist or opera singer, this mixed media of photography and art is terrific.

Bodum Drinkware - For the hot summers coming up, chill your heat away with this line of double wall glassware.

Debage - This is not my cup of tea but if you want to be a Queen for the Day, the bedding is right out of the Rococco period.  Not great for hot flashes, I presume.

John Prince - Plays croquet and paints!  Very talented man!

Gus Modern - For those who love the lean modern furnishings, this is simply that.

Giving Tree - The most luxurious linens around.  Wow!  I’d love to feel what 1020 count sheets feel like. Just might have to save up my pennies.

Green Feet - Save the earth!  Bamboo Disposable plates and utensils.  Group your table setting with the tumblers above from Bodium and you’ll have great conversation pieces for your next outdoor party.

Wilshire Garden - Time to replace the mailbox.  How about a copper one?

Happy shopping and have a great weekend!

Bed and Bath Must Go Together

Bedrooms and bathrooms should be our sanctuaries. Most homeowners tend to create the guest and powder rooms for guests to see but forget about the rooms they spend the most time in. Wouldn’t it be nice to create an incredible atmosphere in your own master bedroom that you’d never want to leave? Try looking at interior design like making a cake. If you don’t have all the ingredients to finish the cake, it might flops or falls You’ll be bothered about the little things and that could carry in to your well being, health and finances.

In the bathroom pictured, I assisted a client in creating the color, lighting and accessory details. The end result came out very nice. I also worked on her master bathroom where we had lighter but similar colors. The master bath leads directly into the bedroom. The client wasn’t ready to commit to changing anything at this time to that room. I thought, “Why not, you’ve come this far?” Some of the elements in the bedroom were very dark to me, so I removed an overwhelming black headboard to create more space and air in the room. The walls were painted a soft honey color and the ceiling in a bluish gray. This room was just OK but doesn’t have the same finishing touch that the bathrooms have. Possibly, my client had a burn out after demolishing the finishing the bathrooms.

When I see my client again, I want to show them this room by Brocade at Home. I would encourage her to purchase some bedding that would tie the rooms together. It is truly amazing but great bedding can make the room. These particular bed pillows match the faux glaze that was painted on the guest bathroom. It has a glossy effect to the walls. It’s a good idea to mirror hard and soft surfaces in subtle ways without going overboard with the same color. I like this headboard but not sure I’d use the white. I have warm honey on the walls so I’d probably paint the headboard in a deeper hue of beige. Can you picture how that might work a bit better with the warm tones in the photo above? Or, one beige pillow directly in the middle would also work.

The other thing I like about the bedding is the print. It’s not too wild but free spirited and the silk pillows really class it up. If you placed bright pink pillows with this, it would turn in to a whole different look, possibly for a little girls room. So, this duvet is perfect for recycling. Hand it down, don’t throw it out – create a new look.

What would be next? Of course, I would finalize a drapery treatment, and I might go with a beautiful sheer in white with a gray lining behind it. The art and accessories for this client will be chosen by her because she has great taste. She might just need my help in placement. That’s always a fun thing to do. Move things around until they find their spot. It’s kind of like the corpse-pose in yoga.

I think what I’m trying to suggest here is that you might as well finalize the entire room, bathroom and even in to the closet. If you are renovating the bathrooms, that is not inexpensive. In fact, I’m sure there isn’t much budget left over when you are done. However, keep the concept in mind of how you truly want to feel in your sanctuary. It will change your life, your intimacy and your sleep patterns

Everything AND the Bathroom Sink

This week, I’m working with a client on finalizing the interior color for their home. The exterior architecture consists of three levels with three triangles, and the interior has tremendous angles and curves, so that might give you an idea of how contemporary it is.

Paint worked perfectly for all the walls of the home except the powder room. This is an area where I can have some fun. The powder room is a great place in the home for making a crazy design statement; dark tones and wild papers are perfect for a small area like this. That is of course, as long as it is an extension of the rest of the environment’s design.

I went about my research to find wallpaper that would tie together their light sconces, which are square and made of a wavy, smoky-white glass. The sink vessel is also wavy on the edges in clear glass. The granite is beautiful, in gray, black and silver. I had a half dozen paper samples with wonderful shapes and textures.

We chose this great design from Marburg to mimic the curvilinear lines and the wonderful silver tones. To finish this room off, I have the perfect piece of art in mind. We need some vivid color against all the gray tones.

The client was very happy with the progress of my concepts. One thing led to another, and they asked me to find some sinks for their master bath, where they have the coolest light fixtures: extremely minimal, white glass discs mounted directly on to the mirrored wall, which reaches to the ceiling.

I ‘m showing the client two different directions on the sinks. The first is a beautiful silver vessel in a mirror finish from Kohler. The beauty of this piece is that it mirrors both the mirrored wall and the round fixtures. The client suggested they wanted a top mount for ease of installation. I love this idea.

However, I could easily be swayed in working with this unique basin from Neo-Metro. Given the boldness of the exterior and interior architecture, why not follow suit with something most folks haven’t seen? I also like the idea because the master bath is not very wide. This basin is minimal, and the sunken detail will give the illusion of more space. I’ll have to get back to you with the before and after.
